Message from MetroED Superintendent Alyssa Lynch

Alyssa Lynch
MetroED
Superintendent
Alyssa Lynch

I would like to wish each of you Happy Holidays and a prosperous New Year! The first semester of the 2017-18 school year has been rewarding for MetroED and our students. We're very proud of the work taking place in our programs at SVCTE and SVAE. In Adult Education, we've already had 9 students complete the High School Diploma and 10 students complete their High School Equivalency.

This year's SVCTE Haunted House helped raise $2,000 for SkillsUSA and student clubs. Our  Mechatronics Engineering class worked on setting up and running the event with assistance from our  Electrical Maintenance students. The event sold over 400 tickets and guests included SVCTE students, their families, and members of the community. Students from our  Metals Technology class used a welding plasma cutter to create Dia de los Muertos skull ornaments that were also sold as a fundraiser at the ticket table.

As we prepare to enter the spring semester, our students will be entering or completing internships and preparing for a lifetime of success in our community. We encourage you to play a part in their success by partnering with our schools to offer internships or making a donation to our student scholarships through the MetroED Foundation

Thank you for supporting our mission to prepare high school and adult students for future success in college and careers. Through business partnerships, community engagement, and a host of fun and exciting events, we hope you can continue to support us in 2018!

San Jose Christmas in the Park Tree Decorated by Fashion Class
SVCTE's Fashion Design and Textile Art class, led by teacher Johnny Paul Vera, helped design and decorate an annual tree at Downtown San Jose's Christmas in the Park. Pictured is also Lucy Ataide of the SVCTE College & Career Center. The tree features purple floral ornaments, gold bulbs, lights, and ribbons with SVCTE's name. The tree is at plot #130 in the park, out of 500 trees this year. It is located across from the Fairmont Hotel main entrance.

Christmas in the Park started in the 1950s and last year had over 600,000 guests. The event is a family oriented Christmas tradition of lights, trees and exhibits in Downtown San Jose's Plaza de Cesar Chavez. The park is open through January 7.
SVCTE Students Sort 3,000 Donated Toys for the Community

Open Doors Campaign Supports South Bay's Adult Learners
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the percentage of adults in the Silicon Valley who do not hold a high school diploma is well into the double digits in some communities, prompting the  South Bay Consortium for Adult Education (SBCAE) to launch Open Doors, a regional campaign that brings to the forefront the diverse adult education programs that put adults lacking language, literacy or technical skills on a solid path to work, school and/or career training.

In the area served by SBCAE, a partnership of five adult schools and four community colleges in Santa Clara County, the percentage of adults without a high school diploma is as high as 17.7% in San Jose, the consortium's largest city, followed by 14.2% in Milpitas, 13.5% in Santa Clara and 12.9% in Morgan Hill, according to census data. Statewide, 18% of the population aged 25 and older does not have a high school diploma or equivalency, according to census data.

Silicon Valley Adult Education is a proud partner of Open Doors. Those interested can visit the campaign website to explore options and complete a short form so a transition specialist may contact them. The website includes a map that shows the location and contact information for each transition specialist. For more information,  visit www.OpenDoorsSouthBay.org or call 408-918-5100.
