Happy Halloween! This month was our exciting 100-Year Centennial Celebration of our high school! Thank you to everyone that came to support our rich history in San Jose. You can read more about the event in this newsletter.

We published our 2017 Annual Report that includes our rich history, captures a wonderful year of student activities, and gives insight into our variety of high school and adult education courses. We are also proud to celebrate a number of events this past month, including Manufacturing Day in San Jose, College Day at SVCTE, and a Halloween Parade at SVAE!

I'm very thankful for your support of our education mission: Preparing Students to Thrive in College and Careers.

SVCTE 100-Year Centennial Celebration

Thank you to our attendees of the 100-Year Centennial Celebration of SVCTE! There was a great number of dignitaries and elected officials that spoke so well of the work teachers and students are doing at our campus. Congratulations for being a part of this historic occasion!

SVCTE Film and Video Production students recorded the event, so a video will be available soon. A number of legislative commendations will be posted at SVCTE, thanks to the work of local and state officials.

SVCTE Students Engage with Partners During College Day

On October 26, SVCTE students assembled to hear a Community College Panel Presentation and browsed information tables set up by local college partners. Great job by  Lucy Ataide in the SVCTE College & Career Center for coordinating this well-attended event!

The following partners met with our excited college-bound students:
  • De Anza College
  • Evergreen Valley College
  • Foothill College
  • Mission College
  • San Jose City College
  • Silicon Valley Career Pathways - Map Your Future
  • West Valley College
SVCTE Students Tour Local Manufacturing Partners

San Jose celebrated national Manufacturing Day 2017 by hosting 40 tours with more than 800 students from five school districts. They toured 11 manufacturing companies in the city on October 5 and 6.

"San Jose continues to play an important role in helping reinvigorate American tech manufacturing," said Mayor Sam Liccardo. "We will continue to engage with a wide array of partners in our community to facilitate the growth of San José's tech manufacturing sector and the jobs they create for our residents."

Participating manufacturers included Acosta Sheet Metal, BD Biosciences, Bentek, Bestronics, BriteLab, Celestica, Naprotek, Therma, Vander-Bend, and Zoll Circulation. Jabil's Blue Sky Center in South San Jose, a state-of-the-art electronics manufacturing facility, hosted an open house on October 6, showcasing new technologies. Our SVCTE Internet Engineering class is in the above photo with teacher Kory Keadle (far left).

Participating students came from East Side Union High School District, San Jose Unified High School District, Metropolitan Education District, Oak Grove School District, and Campbell Unified High School District. The San Jose Office of Economic Development worked in conjunction with the Silicon Valley Organization's Strive Internship Program in securing the schools' participation.

Created by Founding Partner Fabricators and Manufacturers Association, International in 2012, MFG DAY has enjoyed support from many organizations aligned with its mission of positively changing the public perception of modern manufacturing.
SVCTE Medical Assistant Students Gain Work-Based Learning Experience with Homeless Outreach

On Saturday, October 21, 22 high school students from SVCTE Medical Assisting volunteered at Oak Grove Church in San Jose to provide blood pressure measurements and distribute food to homeless community members.

Students helped educate attendees based on their vitals and distributed sanitization products to help mitigate the spread of bacteria and viruses. Live music and free haircuts were provided at the outreach event, and SVCTE students helped serve a hot-lunch meal. The experience was a Work-Based Learning day, with positive feedback shared by the students.
SVAE Celebrates Halloween with Costume Parade & Potluck

Silicon Valley Adult Education students had a terrific time dressing in costume for Halloween. They held a parade around the patio and posed for photos with each other. Prizes were given for the top three costume winners, then classes hosted a potluck party in their classrooms! Happy Halloween!
